Betts's patent portable globe by George Phillip & Son of London, circa 1905, with original card transport packaging of issue. The collapsible globe was invented by John Bett around 1860 and was manufactured by Phillips following Bett's death in 1863. They were especially popular in schools. This example can be dated by the inclusion of the Northern Territory as part of South Australia within a federated Australian continent (post-1901), and the three British South African colonies have yet to unify as the Union or South Africa (so pre-1910). These fragile globes rarely survive, the usual presence of the original tube has no doubt been instrumental in its preservation. It is recommended that conservation is conducted to prevent the splits extending further.
