Description:
William hole (d.1624), Britannia, copper plate engraving with light hand-colouring, being the title page of Camden's Britannia, [London, 1607], 27 x 16.5 cm; framed 44 x 34 cm overall. Neptune and Ceres flank the central roundel with a map of the British Isles (with only the eastern part of Ireland). A seated Britannia at the top is one of the earliest printed depictions of the British allegory. Also shown are small images of a ship, Winchester Cathedral, Stonehenge and a Roman bath.
