An impressive Continental tabernacle/ secretaire, probably of Germanic or Scandinavian origin, c.1800, in burr mixed veneers including walnut, birch etc, over a pine carcass. Contrasting marquetry panels with mixed timbers, stringing and crossbanding, with engraved brass fittings. The upper part drawers have a concealed locking mechanism. The fall front secretaire is over three full length drawers, the whole resting on onion feet. The cabinet offers a staggering 56 drawers and five secret compartments. 226 x 135 x 66 cm
