Description:
Richard Noble (1806-1882), Christ in the house of Martha and Mary, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left: R. Noble / Sydney 1861, 87 x 69 cm. Provenance: 'Robinson Collection', late nineteenth century (according to an annotation on a printed catalogue extract relating to the work pasted to the back of the frame), Leonard Joel, mid-twentieth century (fragmentary label to the frame). Other Notes: based on a composition by Charles de la Fosse (1636-1716) of which three versions by that artist are known, with variations between them (Pushkin Museum Moscow, Musee d'Alencon, France, and Christie's, important old master paintings, New York, 29 January, 1999, lot 95). An English painter trained at the Royal Academy Schools, Noble worked in New South Wales from 1855 to 1868, mostly in portraiture, but also, as with the present lot, in making copies of old Masters to meet the local taste for earlier European paintings.
