A George I walnut side chair, 1720s, the curved 'India' back with a pierced vasiform splat above the drop-in seat, on cabriole supports, the knees of the front supports carved with delicate lappets terminating with bellflowers, the centre of the toprail conforming, 104 cm high. Other Notes: the serpentine-curved chair back, derived from Chinese chairs, began appearing in England around 1715 and was described at the time as an 'Indian' back.
