Vintage, 1958, stainless steel, Rolex Explorer 5504 wristwatch. 35 mm case diameter, acrylic front, with tritium index hour markers and Arabic numerals 3, 6, 9. Automatic self winding movement, 26 jewels, calibre 1530. Inside of case back is stamped model reference 5504 with production date 11.1958. The original black signed Rolex dial, shows signs of ageing, with deterioration in the 'Explorer' name which has faded out - yet traces visible under light and magnification. Super precision is lightly visible above 6 o'clock hour marker. Watch has a khaki coloured nylon nato strap with pin buckle closure. 'In 1957 Rolex introduced the ref 5504 which instead of leveraging a 34 mm case used a larger 36 mm case and was similar in design and feel to the Rolex ref 6610 explorer 1 references. It's been said that the 5504 was a more economical version of the 6610 Explorer 1 as the 5504 is a 'Super Precision' leverages the Rolex caliber 1530 movement which is a non-chronometer rated movement.'
