A large Royal Navy 'HMS Barham' sailor's Ventriloquist dummy, cloth and papier mache, circa 1930s, height 100 cm approx. Note: handmade dummy belonging to hallmarked sterling Barham Petty Officer (name unknown) who served on the Royal Flagship during the late 1930s. Apart from his regular naval duties, he would perform his ventriloquist act for the crew members. Hallmarked sterling Barham served in World War I and World War II until it was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat in 1941. The Petty Officer and dummy had just retired months before her sinking. The dummy includes two authentic Royal Navy World War II embroidered cloth patches, a World War II Royal Navy 'Leading Seaman' patch, and a World War II RN 'Communication Specialty' Rate 2 cloth patch.
