1878 The First Official Australian Team to England: The original scorebook of the Hastings & St. Leonards Cricket Club for 1878 and 1879, which includes the original scorer's records for Eighteen of Hastings & District v Eleven Australians at Hastings, 26th - 28th August 1878. A remarkable match - Australia's Tom Garrett completed a hat-trick in the Hastings & District first innings; Fred Spofforth completed a hat-trick in the Hastings & District second innings. A unique surviving record from this first tour of England. Hard cover, cloth over boards, 34 x 63 cm (opened for display). From May to September in 1878, an Australian cricket team made the inaugural first-class tour of England by a representative overseas side. In October, the Australians played additional matches in the U.S.A. and Canada on their return journey. The tour followed one made by an England team to Australia in 1876–77, during which the first matches retrospectively given Test match status were played. None of the 1878 matches had international status, nevertheless the tour proved to be such an outstanding financial and sporting success that the future of international cricket was assured.
