An imposing polychrome painted and carved wood figure of a saint. French, 17th/18th century. Provenance: Private collection, South Australia. This fine and highly expressive figure has great presence and would have been created by a skilled artist, who understood the challenges of creating such sculptures in wood, which were then decorated with surface paint and in this case gilding, which sets this example ahead of many, as the technique of gilding was always more complex and expensive than polychromy alone.
