A rare, Louis Vuitton Encyclopaedia Britannica library trunk, circa 1911. An early 20th century trunk, specially made for the Encyclopaedia Britannica volume sets. Louis Vuitton produced only one thousand library trunks and they were intended to carry twenty-nine volumes of the eleventh edition of the encyclopaedia. Featuring stencil monogram canvas exterior with leather edging with brass rivets, corners, a trunk latch at each end and a leather top handle. Interior features four compartments, lined in felt and linen, with three dividers. Trunk dimensions are 90 cm x 27 cm x 33 cm. This rare model is featured in Louis Vuitton's 100 Legendary trunks book. The trunk latch is engraved 'Bte Sgdg. Patent, Louis Vuitton, 1 Rue Scribe Paris, 149 New Bond Street London. The interior is labelled 'Specially made for the Encyclopaedia Britannica by Louis Vuitton, 149 New Bond St London'.
