A Wucai 'Buddhist Lion' jar and cover, Ming Dynasty, Wanli Period (1573-1619) the ovoid body with tapered rounded sides rising to a high shoulder and surmounted by a short neck, the exterior vividly painted with a broad frieze of two Buddhist lions prancing amidst dense foliage and interspersed with large iron-red floral blooms, an iron-red band of scrollwork bordering the rim, with original circular flat cover in similar underglaze blue and overglaze enamel flower decoration, unmarked, height 11 cm
