Description:
A rare and important Chinese limestone carved stone torso of Buddha Shakyamuni, Northern Wei Dynasty, 534-550 Ce. The figure is carved standing with the right hand raised, possibly inabhaya mudra, the left arm lowered along the side of the body, possibly invarada mudra. He is wearing an Indian style uttarasanga and antaravasaka, the intermediary shawl secured with a tied cable was first introduced in 489 Ce after a decree which attempted to curb the growing Indian cultural influence on Northern china and promote the sinofication of the nomadic Xianbei society. The asymmetrical execution of the uttarasanga dates to the Eastern Wei. Medieval iconoclastic persecutions of Buddhism, first taking place in 845 AD, are the likely explanation for the damage inflicted upon this image. It would have likely been richly decorated with pigments and gilding. This lot was officially exported from Hong Kong by shippers and handlers recommended and approved by Mass Transit railway Corporation of Hong Kong on the 10th of May 2003, with documentation. Provenance: Roger moss Obe, acquired in Hk 1980-2003. Moss was the president of the Oriental ceramic Society, direct of Mtrc, Hk, an international advisor to Goldman Sachs (Asia), and an expert in Chinese art, 65.5 cm high; 73 cm with mount
