George Thwaites & Son of Melbourne, stunning Colonial sideboard, made from selected choice cuts of fiddleback blackwood, veneered onto Australian cedar, circa 1855. Note, this design was taken from 'Blackie's Cabinet Makers Assistant' [1853]. Originally commissioned by the highly esteemed John Matheson (1824-1882) of the Bank of Victoria. Upon Matheson's passing the piece was then acquired by John Jamieson (accountant at the Bank of Victoria). The piece was then noted in the 1888 sale of Jamieson's possessions 'Grand dining room furniture in choice blackwood, including sideboard 6 feet'. 140 cm high, 210 cm wide, 70 cm deep
