Renoir, Pierre-Auguste (1841 - 1919), autographed letter, signed 'Renoir' and dated August 7, 1901; single sheet (200 x 125 mm) written entirely in Renoir's hand to an unidentified friend ('Cher ami'); the artist apologizes for not having been able to attend the funeral of his friend's loved one, 'Despite a bad attack of rheumatism for the last few days I had been hoping, nonetheless, to be near to you during your sad ceremony. But at the same time my wife had a third boy. She suffered a lot but, fortunately, today all is well and we have re-entered calm waters......As soon as I am a little better, I will come to shake your hand; but until then I shall have to stay quiet.', Attractively farmed and glazed together with a reproduction of a portrait of Renoir by Jean Frederic Bazille, overall 35.5 x 43 cm.
