Jane Brenkley (NZ 1882-1973) roses carved and painted table lamp, the baluster turned base carved, and poker worked in relief with multiple roses, painted in greens, reds and pale tones. Signed and dated 1945, height 46.5 cm. Note: Brenkley has left a unique body of folk art work like no other. Born in Norsewood to Scandinavian parents. At age 18 she married sawmiller Thomas Brenkley and the couple lived most of their lives on the family farm in the Norsewood-Ormondville area. In between raising 10 children and working on the farm, Jane was the community midwife, travelling by bicycle to attend women giving birth. In her spare time she made unique creations that she gifted and sold to supplement the family income.
