Bank Street school, Emerald Hill, 1872, medal in silver (41.5 mm) by W.J. Taylor London, inscribed on reverse 'Bank Street School /Emerald Hill / Annie McArthur/ Dux of School/ 20th December 1872'. The Bank Street school, a small brick building which stood at the western end of Bank Street in what is now South Melbourne, was opened in the 1850s. It was commonly known as the Scots School, because a significant percentage of its pupils came from the families of one of the two large Scottish Presbyterian congregations in Emerald Hill. It was also sometimes referred to simply as Smith's School, after its charismatic headmaster, James Smith, who was in charge from 1860 until 1873.
