Description:
An antique Australian horse racing Wheel-of-Chance, a wheel-of-chance depicting twelve different Australian racehorses, painted and titled in oil paint on cedar, the wheel surrounded by brass strapping and mounted on a later stand; the wheel circa 1890. Overall height: 91 cm; width of wheel 53.5 cm. Provenance: Purchased in Tasmania in 2003. The wheel was removed from one of the earliest pubs in the state. The 12 horses depicted on the wheel include 'Malua' (1884 Melbourne Cup Winner, owned by former Tasmanian Premier Thomas Reibey); 'Commotion' (1884 Melbourne Cup runner-up); 'Sheet Anchor' (1885 Melbourne Cup Winner); 'Grace Darling (1885 Melbourne Cup runner-up); 'Mentor' (1888 Melbourne Cup Winner); 'Tradition' (1888 Melbourne Cup runner-up); and 'Carbine' (1890 Melbourne Cup winner and runner-up in 1889).
