A Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer incense box; Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), 17th century; exceptionally finely and deeply carved with a scene of Budai resting under the moon to the top, and precious emblems to the base, many of the emblems and other surfaces carved with differing intricate diaper motifs. Together with an old Japanese wooden box. 3 cm high, 5 cm diameter; Provenance: Private Collection, Melbourne. Tokyo Art market, 1990s.
