Description:
Bjorn Weckstrom, gold pendant necklace, Finland, circa 1970, designed as an abstract rose, suspended from a textured baton link necklace, maker's mark Bw for Bjorn Weckstrom, Finnish assay mark, 18ct gold, weight 41.7gm, pendant length 4.2 cm, length 43.5 cm. Born in Helsinki, Finland, Bjorn Ragnar Weckstrom (born 1935) graduated from the Helsinki Goldsmith's school in 1956. His work initially followed a smooth and recognisable Scandinavian style until the early 1960s, when Weckstrom took inspiration from gold nuggets he found in Lapland - evident in the design of this necklace. In 1961, he exhibited his work at 'The international exhibition of modern Jewelry' in London and his pieces sold well. Upon his return to Finland, he attracted the attention of PPekka Vlademar Anttila and Weckstrom began working for his Company, Kruunu-Koru Oy, which would later become Lapponia jewellery. Weckstrom's new sculptural approach to jewellery design led to his appointment as the company's chief designer and Art director.
