A rare and important Chinese pale white jade 'Animal Mask' staff fitting late Hongshan culture, circa 3,500-3000 BC the thick-sided fitting is carved to each side with an animal mask, detailed with large circular eyes, nostrils and a long narrow mouth, surrounding a cylindrically hollowed centre., 5.6 cm diameter. Provenance: An important private collection, acquired from Hong Kong in the early 90s.
