A good Edgar Mansfield animism sculpture, cast bronze set in a composite base, unique example, purchased directly from the artist and held in the same collection for over 40 years. Sold together with correspondence from the artist, Edgar Mansfield was a renowned artist and book binder born in London in 1907, Mansfield emigrated to New Zealand with his parents, settling in Hastings in 1911. He studied at the King Edward Technical College with William Allen and Robert field. After four years teaching at the Feilding Agricultural school he returned to London in 1934 and undertook further study. After war service from 1941 -1946 he continued bookbinding and design, which he taught at the London College of Printing from 1948 to 1964 on his return to New Zealand Mansfield settled in Napier and started producing superb bronze sculptural works. Mansfield was the first president of the Britain's Guild of contemporary Bookbinders (1955- 1968) and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1980. 87 cm height
