Description:
A large and impressive Kato Alu woven basket, Tonga, Kato alu are used in gift giving or exchanges for important occasions such as weddings and funerals. The kato alu were initially only used by high-status individuals but at present are used by many Tongans. The kato alu is woven from tightly-coiled alu and coconut midrib, then coloured with a black pigment which is often made with soot. This kato alu has been woven in a very large circular form with short sides. Height 19 cm, depth 74 cm
