An Asmat archer's shield, Papua New Guinea, 20th century. Used to protect the side of the body when shooting arrows. Carved from a single piece of wood. At the top of the shield there is a groove cut out so that it can sit under the armpit. The shield is decorated in hues of brown and white pigments. Length 58.5 cm, width 27 cm, depth 2.5 cm
