A stone pestle, Western Provence, Solomon Islands, 19th century. Used for grinding foods and plant fibres. This pestle is carved from a single piece of stone with a faint curvature to the shaft. Patterns have been deeply incised around the head of the pestle and the handle. Length 29 cm, width 8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Aotearoa.
