A pou Whakairo figure, Aotearoa. A rare free standing female figure hand-carved from wood. The figure displays a superb sculptural quality and bears similarities in form and materiality to the known 'Frum' figure. Featuring inlaid metal almond shaped eyes that are secured with pins. A wood topknot to the top of the head features dense horse hair that is secured with nails. With an incised ta moko facial tattoos around the slightly parted lips. The pou whakairo has three-finger hands resting at the stomach with elbows bent behind the body. The figure's knees are slightly bent and the feet also have three digits. A vulva is depicted in raised relief between the legs. Figure height 29 cm, width 9 cm, depth 8 cm, on stand height 38 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Aotearoa
