A Phemba maternity figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yombe maternity figures were often placed upon shrines to honour ancestral mothers. This figure is carved from wood with a rich brown patina and her hair is coloured with black pigment. The female figure is bare-chested with enlarged breasts. The eyes have been detailed with white and black pigments and covered with small pieces of glass creating a captivating gaze. She sits with her legs crossed, and upon her lap is a small child.
