A Kwele mask, Gabon. This mask is used in the Beete society's rite of passage initiations. The Beete society promotes peace and maintains social order of the Kwele. This mask has an oval face surmounted by large ram horns that create a heart-shaped form. The almond shaped eyes have thin slits which May indicate that this mask was not worn but rather shown. The masks is boldly coloured in brown, red, and white natural pigments. The multiple layers of pigment suggest the lived history of this piece in that the mask has been repainted as the colours lose vibrancy through usage. On custom wooden stand.
