A Songye power figure, Democratic Republic of Congo. This power figure was created to ward off witchcraft and sorcery and protect the community in which it lived with. These figures are created in collaboration between a skilled carver and a ritual practitioner in order to fully realise the figures power. This figure depicts a woman as denoted by the breast and vulva. The figure has a exaggerated head and a square jaw. As is typical with Songye power figures, the figure features large almond shaped eyes and a square open mouth. At the brow is a metal nail head and at the top of the head is a large horn, both of these materials are considered magical by the Songye and would have increased the power this figure holds.
