A Dogon Tellem figure, Mali. Tellem figures were sprinkled with blood of chickens and were later burried with their owners. Tellem figures are characterised by their elongated forms and arms raised above the head, a gesture that signifies rain. This figure is carved from a single piece of wood and depicts a female. The figure has significant age to it that is signified by the deeply encrusted patina. Figure height 47 cm, width 6.5 cm, depth 6.4 cm, on stand height 50.2 cm.
