Early contact period pou Whakarae head (palisade post), carved timber, the arresting humanistic head with full facial moko with deeply recessed wheku from eyes. The forehead with Nga Tiwana carved detail, the nose with double rauru spirals and with Nga Pae Tarewa lines running from the nose and framing the mouth, weathered across the surface. Raised on a later metal presentation stand, this impressive and commanding Maori sculpture was probably once part of the main palisade post of a Maori pa, or defensive settlement or hill fort. Provenance: Webb's Oceanic and African Art June 2010. Private Collection Auckland, acquired from the above, 28 cm length, 16 cm width
