The 1965-66 Ashes series was a drawn series with Australia retaining the Ashes. McKenzie played in 4 Tests taking 16 wickets. He took 5 for 134 in the England's first Innings of the 2nd test at the MCG, and 6 for 48 in England's first Innings of the 4th test at Adelaide, and along with Bobby Simpson's 1st Innings double century and Neil Hawke's 5 for 54 in England's 2nd Innings, enabled Australia to secure their only win of the series. Ian Chappell made his test Debut for the one-off test against Pakistan in December 1964, where he scored 11 runs and took 4 catches. He did not reappear in the Australian team until selected as an all-rounder for the Fourth test of the 1965-66 Ashes series scoring 17 runs. He was Australia's most used bowler in England's 2nd Innings, completing 22 overs at an economic 1.80 per over. Chappell went on to Captain Australia 30 times, winning 15 and losing only 5. He made 5345 career test runs at an average of 42.4.
