Two unusual embroidered textile sutra panels, probably forming the front and back panels of an original set of folios, each panel of rectangular form embroidered with the eight Buddhist emblems, Bajixiang, supported on a lotus flower and encircled with foliate scrolls, worked in satin and outline stitches and framed by double line borders, encircled with a frieze of ten striding dragons pursuing flaming pearls, all reserved on the yellow ground of embroidered squares, each 11.5 cm x 43.5 cm, Compare with two embroidered panels from a complete set of 20 embroidered textile sutra, dated to the Qing dynasty,18th century, sold Christie's, Hong Kong, 30 May 2005, lot 1246, in this set the remaining 18 loose folios were embroidered with Sanskrit text of the Sanyun sutra. The Sanyun Jing is a sutra of atonement based on the three principles: to regret one's sin, to do good deeds and to voice Buddha's teachings.
