Description:
The Kaiserin, Augusta, Fluss Expedition, Papua New Guinea. Impressive oversized German silver and glass claret jug engraved in German on the lid (translation), 'in Grateful Memory, The Members of The Kaiserin Augusta-River-Expedition, 1912/13'. The expedition was the largest undertaken in German times and also the last. It was sponsored jointly by the Colonial Office, the Konigliches Museum of Berlin and the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft. Led by mining engineer A. Stolle, it included among its scientists the anthropologist R. Thurnwald and Prof. W. Behrmann of the Berlin University as geographer. Its purpose was to explore the Sepik River basin and adjacent mountains. The expedition made significant contributions to geographical and anthropological knowledge of one of the last unexplored inhabited areas of the planet.
