The female figure has a banner around her arm reading 'Excelsior', a latin phase, which was adopted as the motto of New York in 1778, and translates to 'Higher' or 'Upward', inscribed 'E Picault' to back and 'A Monsieur Garnier (Emile) souvenir de l'exposition universelle, 1889.
