George II fine and rare scarlet lacquered long case clock with chinoiserie decoration, by William Monk of London, circa 1740. Hood decorated with turned pilasters to either side of the brass break arch dial finely engraved, with cast gilt spandrels to corners, Arabics and Romans to the chapter ring. Sunburst arched boss flanked by marine grotesque spandrels, concave moulding to the trunk throat with a single break arch door. Engrave dial marked 'William Monk', active Berwick-St. John, 1690-1753. Original month going movement with five finely turned pillars and internal count wheel strike, with brass cased weights and pendulum. 241 cm high
