A rare mottled white jade Five-Tiered Cong, Neolithic period, Liangzhu culture (circa 3,300-2,300 BC) of square cross section surrounding a cylindrically hollowed tube to the centre with rounded square corners, and tapered slightly from top to bottom. The sides are divided into five registers with a stylised mask at each of the four corners, comprising two long bars above a shorter bar and flanked by two incised circles forming eyes. The stone is of a milky white colour with some green veining and russet inclusions, 12.5 cm high. Provenance: an old private collection, Taiwan. Acquired from a Hong Kong in the early 90s.
