Description:
A large and impressive fertility hook, Papua New Guinea, food and valuables are suspended from these hooks in baskets and bags. The hooks are then suspended from the rafters of buildings. This hook is carved from a hardwood and covered in a dark pigment. The hook depicts a large female figure with a smaller figure, possibly a child sitting upon her head. The eyes of the female figure are made from large disk shaped shells. The hook has been coloured with red, white, and yellow pigments. Height 181 cm, width 96 cm, depth 9 cm
