Description:
A Tumbuan dance costume, lower Sepik, Papua New Guinea, many tumbuan masks represent ancestors and are produced throughout the Sepik region. Worn by the secret Dukduk society during initiation ceremonies. Made of bark stretched over a wooden frame, decorated with a dramatic skirt of long rattan. The face is carved from wood, coloured with natural pigment and fringed with feathers. Purchased from Sotheby's Sydney 1996. Height 170 cm, diameter 137 cm
