(l Arthur John Fleischmann (Czech/Australia, 1896-1990), Balinese boy, terracotta sculpture, incised on reverse 'A. Fleischmann', made in 1938 with original wooden stand, 28 cm high, 26 cm wide, note: Fleischmann was born in Pressburg, Austro- Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovakia), and studied Art in Prague, Vienna, Italy and France before arriving in Australia in 1939. En-route to Australia he worked in Bali for six months in 1938, and during this stay he completed 25 terracotta studies of local people which he brought with him to Australia. Few have survived and only four known examples have appeared on the open market in the last 30 years. A rare piece.
