Cylindrical vase, decorated with Cultural Revolution transfer prints of paramount leader Mao Zedong and Lin Biao, his then second-in-command and designated successor but who died in a plane crash in September 1971 in Mongolia after the discovery of a plot to remove Mao. He was posthumously condemned as a traitor. Beneath the image of the pair it reads 'Chairman Mao and his close comrade Lin Biao inspect the army of the Cultural Revolution'. On the reverse it reads 'Chairman Mao quotation / Grasp the revolution and promote production', 12.5 cm high, 5.3 cm diameter, Provenance: Michael Backman, London 2011
