Mauchline Ware single stamp compartment circular stamp box, with a superb reproduction of a Queen Victoria one penny red stamp, and on the underside of the base a lithograph of 'Bournemouth Pier' a fine example of their workmanship and a rare example of the one penny red stamp box. Mint condition. Provenance: Argyll Etkin, London, July 1996. 4.5 cm diameter, x 1.8 cm. Other Notes: some 11 miles inland from the Scottish coastal resort of Ayre lies the small town of mauchline. In the 1860s it was the centre of an industry employed some four hundred people in the manufacture of small wooden souvenirs and gift ware.
