A Chokwe mask, Angola. This Pwo (face mask) is an idealised representation of a Chokwe woman. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood, featuring a tripartite hairstyle, slit eyeholes, and a intricately carved nose and mouth. The scarification on the forehead is of a chingelyengelye cross wich represents the rising and the setting of the sun. At the crown of the mask is a beaded headdress with tresses of plant fibre hair.
