A Ofika Mbole hanging man figure, Democratic Republic of Congo, the hanging man figure which is also known as a 'Ofika' is used by the Lilwa, a male initiation group that oversees the education of young boys growing up in Mbole society. The Ofika is used to depict the consequences for individuals who break conduct of LilwaThis figure has been carved from a single piece of hardwood and was highly polished. The figure has his hands resting on his thighs and feet pointing downwards. At the neck is a cord made from plaited plant fibre which as used to hang the figure. The face has remnants of a white pigment which is common for these figures. The carving also features a large headdress with chicken figures. Mounted on a wood and metal stand. Height 59 cm, width 29 cm, depth 12 cm. Previously of the collection of Zoumana (Bamba) Traore, New York.
