A Malangan figure, New Ireland, Malangan is a cycle of rituals that express many complex rituals and philosophies surrounding the parting of the dead. The top half of the figure is carved from a hardwood and depicts the torso up of a person and the lower section depicts a fish.This Malangan figure tells the story of a person who was killed by a fish. The figure is heavily coloured in a white pigment and detailing in brown and black pigments, fine plant fibres form the hair and shells for eyes.On a wood stand.
