A Yaka Ndeemba mask, Democratic Republic of Congo. This Ndeemba mask would have originally had an impressive mane of raffia surrounding the wearers head, the raffia would have almost enveloped the face of the mask. Ndeemba masks would be worn dancers at initiation events and are only used once, after these events the masks are either destroyed or sold.The top of the mask features a central spire with three graduating brims of fabric. The carved wood face of the mask features a upturned hook nose. Mounded on a wood stand. Height 77 cm, width 24 cm, depth 25 cm
