Description:
19th century British the cutter 'Alarm' crosses the line c.1830, oil on canvas. This painting shows the cutter 'Alarm' crossing the line ahead of Lord Belfast's cutter 'Louisa'. This is one of the earliest paintings of a regatta. It can be accurately dated from squadron records between 1829 and 1832. The Cutters are identified by their racing pennants. The 'Alarm' was owned by Mr Joseph Weld. He owned estates in Dorset and it was a member of his family came to Marlborough, New Zealand, and founded Flaxbourne station with Mr Clifford. So Marlborough has a direct link with the beginnings of yachting. Cowes is still the centre of British yachting. It was here the America's cup, then known as the Guinea cup, was won by the schooner yacht 'America' in a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851.
