An embroidered brown silk-ground 'Dragon' robe Qing dynasty, early 19th century, the semi-formal court robe, Jifu, worked in couched gold wrapped thread, satin stitch and Peking knot, with nine rampant five-clawed dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls among red bats, multi-coloured ruyi-shaped cloud scrolls and 'Auspicious emblems', all above turbulent waves crashing on rocks strewn with red-bloomed peony sprays, and with triangular lishui striped borders at the corners, the decoration repeated in the borders around the neck and chest and the horse-hoof cuffs with butterflies, floral sprigs and the bajixiang emblems on a black ground, 147 cm long, 188 cm wide.
