Boer War: 1902 printed letter signed 'Ew Witton' (with the envelope on which it was sent) asking the recipient to sign a petition to the King for the release of Lt George Ramsdale Witton, who was sentenced to death for murder - together with 'Breaker' Morant & Peter Handcock - after the shooting of nine Boer prisoners. [Lt Gr Witton joined the Victorian Imperial Bushmen and served in the Bushveldt Carbineers in the Boer War in South Africa; Handcock & Morant were executed by firing squad on 27 February 1902; Lord Kitchener commuted Witton's sentence to life imprisonment, but after further protests he was released on 12 November 1904, later living in Gippsland & Queensland as a dairy farmer]
