Description:
A rare inscribed Chinese bronze Buddhist votive shrine, Northern Wei (386-534AD), 5TH/6th century, a portable devotional bronze votive shrine modelled as a stele raised on a four-legged plinth, the stele depicting a Buddha seated in padmasana with one hand raised in abhaya mudra, the other in varada mudra, surrounded by a flame mandorla, and further surrounded by a larger flame mandorla, flanked by two Bodhisattvas and with a smaller buddha above. The plinth is inscribed to the front and side, roughly translating to 'Commissioned by Shi Chen, follower of the Buddha'. Together with a fine, fitted hardwood stand, and a high quality purple silk-lined Japanese wooden box. An important Melbourne collection. The bronze 12.25 cm high, 5.5 cm wide. With stand 13.5 cm high. The box 17 cm high, 9 cm wide, 7.5 cm deep. Provenance: Senshutey, Tokyo, 2018. An important private collection, Melbourne.
