Edward Fischer (attributed), Colonial Australian silver mounted emu egg ewer, Geelong, Victoria, 19th century, 30.5 cm high. Provenance: The Edward Clark collection, Melbourne. Edward Francis Gunther Fischer was born in Vienna, arriving in Victoria in the 1850s. He was married in Geelong and probably commenced his jewellery and silversmithing business there. His last listing for Geelong is in 1891, when he is believed to have retired. Fischer's presentation pieces are of the highest standard, but many of them are unmarked or marked with the name of the retailer, frequently Walsh Bros. 'Fischer was an outstanding silversmith and even unmarked pieces can be attributed readily, because of his distinctive and tasteful style.' (Houstone, p.163).
